OPPA seeking members to support association efforts to oppose "reparative" or conversion therapy

The OPPA supports the official Position Statement of the American Psychiatric Association and opposes any psychiatric treatment, such as “reparative” or conversion therapy, which is based upon the assumption that homosexuality per se is a mental disorder or based on the prior assumption that a patient should change his/her sexual homosexual orientation.

With that said, the OPPA is opposed to efforts legislatively to restrict or forbid certain specific therapies as it intrudes upon the professional’s responsibility to determine appropriate treatment. The OPPA is further opposed to legislative language restricting or preventing any questioning or communication between the patient and physician that the physician regards as medically appropriate. Physicians are bound by broadly accepted ethical and professional values and standards.

The OPPA is working with other groups that oppose such therapy and welcomes OPPA members who wish to be involved to help raise awareness.
