Coalition for Healthy Communities - Access to Medications Subcommittee
As a subcommittee of the CHC, members work together to promote and ensure open access to medications for individuals with mental illness. The Access to Medications Subcommittee works with the Ohio Department of Job & Family Services (ODJFS) and its Pharmacy and Therapeutics (P&T) Committee to ensure that patients in Ohio with mental illness have access to medications and that the psychiatrists who treat a majority of individuals diagnosed with severe and persistent mental illness are not burdened with prior approval processes, which can often delay treatment. In addition to obtaining an exemption for psychiatrists from prior authorization for atypical antipsychiatics and antidepressants, the group continues to work with managed care companies which took over management of the pharmacy benefits in 2011. Most recently, the subcommittee has been successful in improving access to injectable atypical antipsychotics.
