Too Ill to Execute

A new documentary, To Ill to Execute, details the urgency of a movement to exclude those with severe mental illness from the death penalty in states across the U.S. Ohio's former Ohio Supreme Court Justice Evelyn Stratton and OPPA member, Megan Testa, MD, share their expertise in the film.

OPPA was a strong proponent of House Bill 81 from the last General Assembly that would bar the state of Ohio from executing inmates who were severely mentally ill at the time of their offenses. The proposal, previously sponsored by State Representative Bill Seitz (R-Cincinnati) and Sen. Nickie Antonio (D-Lakewood), cleared the House Criminal Justice Committee in December, however the bill did not receive a vote in the full chamber.

The OPPA will work with other members of the Ohio Alliance for the Mental Illness Exemption (OAMIE) to see that the bill gets reintroduced this new legislative session.
