The rates for completed suicides have risen by nearly 30% in the past 20 years and, although males take their lives at a higher rate overall, the National Center for Health Statistics finds that the number of girls and women who complete suicide is rising faster than in males.

In 2016, approximately 21 males out of 100,000 took their own lives compared to only six females out of 100,000, however, for females between the ages of 45 and 64, the suicide rate has increased by 60%. That increase for females was more than double the increase for for men.
