NY Governor bans reimbursement for reparative (conversion) therapy

N.Y. Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo has announced a series of measures intended to eliminate conversion therapy for minors. Insurers in New York, for instance, will be prohibited from covering the cost of such therapy for anyone under 18, and Medicaid as well as centers overseen by the State Office of Mental Health will be prohibited from providing conversion therapy to minors. In praising Cuomo’s move, APA CEO and Medical Director Saul Levin, M.D., M.P.A., wrote in a blog post today, “We at APA applaud Gov. Cuomo for taking a public stance against an unethical and potentially harmful treatment based on the false idea that homosexuality is, per se, a mental disorder.”
